1. What is a spring hammer test apparatus?

Spring hammer test apparatus, also be called as spring impact hammer or spring hammer, it is a professional testing equipment to assess the material or products against to mechanical impact strength. The spring hammer test is to simulate the products may suffer the mechanical impact during the transport, use and accident, so as to ensure the safety and reliability of the product in actual application.


2. Basic structure of spring hammer

The spring hammer consists of three principal parts: the body, the striking element and release system. The body comprises the housing, the guide for the striking element, the release mechanism and all parts rigidly fixed thereto.The striking element comprises the hammer head, the hammer shaft and the cocking knob. The mass of this assembly is 250g for severities not exceeding 1J, and 500g for 2J.

3. Working Principle of Spring Hammer

The working principle of the spring impact hammer is based on the mass of striking element and the movement of the hammer spring to generate standard energy. When cocking knob is pulled, the release jaw falls on the release point of the striking element, the hammer spring is compressed, and the energy is stored. Different amounts of compression result in different energies being released, which are calibrated on a spring hammer calibrator at the factory.


4. Application and reference standard

The mechanical impact tester is designed according to IEC60068-2-75 and GB2423.55. It is applied to test the mechanical impact strength of housings, operating levers, handles, knobs, indicator lights and other parts of household and similar electrical products, which can meet the test requirements of IEC60598-1, IEC62262, EC60068-2-63 and etc..


5.   IK levels that can be tested with a spring hammer

The spring hammer test apparatus is applied to the tests which impact energy does not exceed 2J, that means from IK01 to IK07. But in practice, IK08/5J spring hammer is developed and applied to test the electric vehicle charging station.

6. The material of Spring Hammer

The shell of spring hammer is made of stainless steel to improve its durability.

The striking element for 1J and below spring hammers is made of steel, and for 2J and 5J spring hammers, the striking element is made of polyamide.


7. How to operate the spring hammer test?

When using a spring hammer test apparatus, user first need to fix the sample and select the appropriate impact energy and test position. Pull the cocking knob of the spring hammer until you hear a "click" sound, indicating that the spring hammer is in the ready state. Then, align the spring hammer vertically with the sample surface and make contact with it, slowly increase pressure to retract releasing conical head until hammerhead is released to strike the enclosure.
